HOA Board Member Roles & Responsibilities

Homeowners associations are all run by a group of lead Board members known as the Board of Directors. Each HOA Board member has different duties and responsibilities to ensure the HOA runs smoothly.

Let’s look at the four roles within the Board of Directors and their responsibilities within the HOA.

President

The HOA President’s primary role is to oversee all of the decisions made within the HOA. The President must know all the HOA’s bylaws, regulations, and daily operations to ensure everything runs smoothly. The President is also in charge of and leads the HOA meetings, so good public speaking skills are a must.

Vice-President

The Vice President has essentially all the same responsibilities as the President and will assume the President’s role if the President cannot. This means the Vice President must have a solid understanding of all bylaws and regulations so they can jump in immediately and ensure a seamless transition. In addition, The President can delegate duties to the Vice President, so they might be responsible for other projects or overseeing HOA operations.

Secretary

The Secretary of the HOA has a very important role because they handle all the documentation and records within the HOA. They are also responsible for keeping the HOA compliant with all legal requirements by submitting any necessary forms before deadlines. The HOA Secretary informs other Board members and residents of upcoming meetings and will record the meeting minutes for future reference.

Treasurer

The HOA Treasurer is in charge of association funds and financial matters. They keep a detailed record of current funds and monitor any disbursements of funds. In addition, the HOA Treasurer creates the annual budget, handles the HOA’s taxes, and conducts regular audits.
