Regarding homeowner associations, some are more strict than others with rules and regulations. HOA rules and regulations aim to help protect homes and the community and create a safe environment to live in. Breaking HOA rules, even accidentally, can have consequences and be costly. 

Let’s look at 5 of the most common HOA rule violations.

Vehicles and Parking

HOAs often have a limit on the number of vehicles that can be kept on the property or parked in the driveway. In addition, some HOAs also have rules set out for overnight parking on the street.

Landscaping and Fencing

HOAs are responsible for the neighborhood’s curb appeal and overall look, so weeds and unkempt lawns are a big no-no. Many HOAs even have rules on the types of plants and trees homeowners can plant. 

Taking it one step further, some HOAs have rules on whether or not fencing is allowed. If it is allowed, there are often rules on the type or color of fencing residents are allowed to have. This is due to the HOA trying to maintain the overall look and aesthetic of the neighborhood.

Noise and Social Gatherings

Like most cities and neighborhoods, most HOAs have rules that restrict noise between certain night/early morning hours. In addition, HOAs may have rules for social gatherings to align with the noise ordinance and overnight parking rules. 

Pets

Some people love pets more than others, and unfortunately for those who are obsessed with our pets, HOAs have to cater to everyone. This means that some HOAs have rules for the number of pets allowed in a home and specific areas where dogs can and cannot walk. 

Design Changes

Many neighborhoods have homes with similar exterior looks and interior floor plans, and HOAs are no different. HOAs want to maintain the look of the community and will often have rules on the appearance of homes. Depending on the HOA, things like painting your home a different color, adding a patio or deck, or adding a fence (as mentioned earlier) are often not allowed.
