Last year we covered how there’s an increase in multigenerational homes. This year, we’ll cover the benefits of having a multigenerational home.
For a review, a multigenerational home is when at least two adult generations live together in the same property. This can include grandparents and grandchildren under 25, but every family and household is unique. Generation United surveyed homeowners living in a multigenerational setting and these were the benefits they reported:
Better Relationships
While on the surface it may sound complex to have so many varying ages living under one household, but almost 80% of homeowners reported an enhanced bond or relationship among family members. This is due to the family participating in intergenerational activities like cooking, sharing stories, or family history. This living situation allows for special bonds between family members, like grandchildren and their grandparents.
Better Care
With people of various ages living in one household, it is easier to receive help and split up the family chores. For example, while Mom goes to work, Grandma and Grandpa can provide free daycare and watch their grandchildren. Or the opposite situation, kids that come home from school in the afternoon can help care for their elderly grandparents. Almost 80% of Americans surveyed said it’s easier to provide care for one or more family members.
Additional Benefits of Multigenerational Homes
Other benefits of multigenerational living that over 70% of surveyors cited were:
- Improving the finances of one or more family members
- Has a positive impact on mental and/or physical health
- Made it possible for a family member to continue school or enroll in job training
What Kind of Home Do You Need for a Multigenerational Home?
In the survey, there were specific home designs that contributed to successful multigenerational living arrangements. The home designs were the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, private spaces, common areas for the family to gather, home additions, and having a designated kitchen time or routine. Two in five surveyors said having a private space of their own made multigenerational living successful. Intergenerational activities were cited as a reason why this setup works, which is why it’s essential to have a space dedicated for these activities.
