HOA board members help guide the community and keep the neighborhood on track. Having outlined roles and responsibilities for board members keeps the community running smoothly as well as helps the board understand their individual duties. Let’s take a look at the HOA board roles.

President

The HOA president is generally the liaison between the community and the board. They channel communications and keep everyone informed. As the face of the HOA board, the president is also usually the one to handle the logistics of the association board meetings and keep everyone on task and on track to meet goals. The president should have a good understanding of the governing documents and be able to help handle disputes.

Vice President

The HOA vice president is there to step in if the president cannot be present. The vice president is the second in command and helps the president tackle their tasks. They share many of the responsibilities the president does and should also have a good understanding of the governing documents.

Treasurer

The HOA treasurer looks after the association’s finances. This includes assisting with the budget process, reviewing the association’s monthly financials, reporting this information to the board, approving invoices, and signing association checks. Managing billing and collections as well as the operating and reserve funds all fund under the treasurer’s responsibility.

Secretary

The HOA secretary handles all of the important paperwork and is another layer of support for the HOA board. They make sure the deadlines for meeting notices are met, keep the meeting minutes, keep official records, and help develop meeting agendas.

Member at Large

The HOA member at large isn’t a role that all associations will have. The responsibility of the person in this role is to attend board meetings, provide input and feedback, act as the intermediary between the board and the residents, and submit a potentially tie-breaking vote on association matters. The other duties of this role vary by association, depending on the availability of the member and the needs of the board.
