Everyone’s moving to Austin! And if you’re thinking about it too, here is what you need to know about our beloved city.
What It’s Like
Austin is the capital of the Lone Star State, with over a million residents and counting! It was founded in 1837 and has transformed over the years. Currently, it’s nicknamed the Silicon Hills, as several California businesses, mainly from the Silicon Valley, are relocating to Austin, Texas. It is home to South by Southwest and Austin City Limits, a famous musical and annual pilgrimage for many. It is also home to popular Fortune 500 companies like Apple, Facebook, Google, and Whole Foods Market.
Cost of Living
Austin is one of the more expensive cities in Texas, but still, a bargain compared to New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. The median household income is about $77K, as reported by the Austin Chamber of Commerce.
Austin Job Market
Due to the high and booming tech industry, the city is constantly growing. Google, Facebook, AMD, PayPal, Indeed, and many others bring many tech jobs to the area. While tech is the focus, Austin offers top industries like business services, government, education, and health services.
Austin Weather
Our Texas city receives almost 300 days of sunshine, making it a hot haven for those who can withstand the heat. While it does get hot in the summer, the surrounding hills help cool down the area compared to Dallas and Houston summers. Besides summer and its over 90 degree days, Austin has moderate temperatures. Fall from September to November has highs of the 90s and lows of 50s. Winters only get as cold as 40 degrees. Spring warms up with temperatures ranging from the low 70s to the high 80s.
Austin Attractions
Being the “Live Music Capital of the World,” our musical city hosts many music festivals and events, like South by Southwest mentioned earlier. The ten-day event celebrates music, film, and tech and brings in people by the hundreds of thousands. Within the city, there are a plethora of music venues to host musicians from all around the world. Another famous festival is the Austin Food and Wine Festival, where the best restaurants and chefs from Central Texas come together. The Fantastic Fest focuses on action, sci-fi, horror, and more genres. It’s one of the large genre film festivals in the U.S.!
Austin Outdoor Activities
Austin has all the outdoor activities you could imagine! From boating to hiking to swimming and outdoor sports, we have it all. Lady Bird Lake is a popular destination for boat rentals, kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, biking, and outdoor exercising as it offers 416 acres of recreation. Zilker Park is another popular destination as the large grass pad provides space for volleyball, outdoor concerts, and more. Barton Pool is the place to be when those summer temperatures become a little too hot. The public outdoor swimming pool offers spring water to visitors for a small fee.
